WorldShift is an intriguing real-time strategy experiment, with a weird far-future story and three complementary races. It also has a wide range of solo, co-op, and Deathmatch modes of play, which means that it comes with plenty under the hood. Unfortunately, the gameplay itself is mired in the past. Although the multiplayer games have been intricately designed with a lot of strategic depth and many elements borrowed from massively multiplayer online games, much of this has been wasted on a boring point-and-click RTS that seems to have traveled through time from 1997. This problem, along with a range of serious single-player bugs, make the game look better on paper than it is in reality.

Worldshifts storyline, backdrop, and three factions are almost surreal. The time is the far future and the place is Earth long after an asteroid called Shard Zero went all 2012 to create a plague that destroyed and reshaped the entire planet. Everything has changed so much that the game might as well be taking place on an alien world. Flora and fauna consist of extraterrestrial additions like the sort of giant exotic plants that decorated the strange new worlds in old Star Trek episodes. Huge mushrooms can be found all over the place in some maps, and many are big enough to house hundreds of Smurfs, along with sinister-looking refugees from the Little Shop of Horrors. Overall, the look of the game is odd and effective, succeeding in transporting you to a colorful take on the future even while the repetitive, generic RTS order acknowledgements and corny militaristic music often beam you right back home.

Modes of play have obviously been built around multiplayer. You need to log in online whenever you start the game, whether you are entering the single-player campaign, playing cooperative missions, or taking on all comers in Deathmatch modes that range from mano-a-mano games to three-versus-three team contests. Finding an online match isnt particularly easy, though. Few seem to be playing either Deathmatch or co-op, although if you stick around for an hour or so, you can likely find a game. Its something of a shame that more people arent playing online, too, because it features some really good ideas taken from MMOGs like World of Warcraft and multiplayer role-playing games like Diablo. Co-op maps let you team up with two buddies to scrap your way through levels, taking on computer-controlled mobs and bosses with big loot. The one drawback is that games often suffer from noticeable lag.

The three sci-fi/fantasy mash-up factions featured here have also been designed extremely well for multiplayer matchups. Humans come from five big cities that survived the cataclysm, employing battle robots and armored troops. Tribes consist of mutated humans living in the wild that use fantasy-standard weapons and magic. Here, you deal with shamans, spear-throwing heathens, and the like. And the Cult is an alien civilization that features units with shape-changing abilities and futuristic hardware. This trio fits together very well because each comes with pluses and minuses that you need to deal with in multiplayer matches. They also have a variety of troop types that use very similar melee and ranged attacks. The rock-paper-scissors formula is solid here. Factions also have unique looks, so you can always tell whos who at a glance. There isnt a huge range of units available to each side, although there are enough to keep things interesting and force you to rely on tactical planning during matches.

Its only been a couple months since the release of the first DeathSpank and were lucky enough to already have a sequel. The Diablo-style action RPG from the mind of Ron Gilbert (Secret of Monkey Island) proved to be one of the most addictive games of the year, so a second visit from the Hero to the Downtrodden is quite welcome. DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue is more of the same -- same gameplay, same music, same sense of humor. But that wont be a bad thing for anyone who enjoyed the first romp.

DeathSpank is a heros hero; a champion so intent on doing good that he cant help but assist every last poor soul that crosses his path. From rich aristocrats to redneck hicks, everyone has a quest for DeathSpank and he cannot say "no." Thats what these games are all about: running errand after errand after errand for people. One minute youre recovering stolen feminine products for a damsel in distress and the next youre convincing a drunken pirate to give up the keys to his pirate ship. I happen to love the formula and find myself compelled to complete every last quest and sidequest. Along the way youll gain experience, level up, and collect hundreds and hundreds of weapons and items to equip.

Thongs of Virtue picks up a while after DeathSpank left off, with the hero having defeated who he thought was his arch nemesis -- only to learn there are others in the circle of evil that need be brought to justice. While this sequel does feel very much like the original and sends you on the same sorts of quests, you will be traveling to quite different locales. Gone are the mostly fantasy areas of DeathSpank. Here youll be visiting battlefields that recall World War II, the Old West, and robot factories. You can play with a bunch of fun new weapons and battle new enemies.

The new ranged weapons are a significant improvement to your arsenal. I dont know about you, but I found the crossbows pretty ineffectual in the first game and ended up ignoring them. In Thongs of Virtue you have access to machine guns, bazookas, and lasers -- really fun stuff. Theyre effective at taking out enemies from a distance and provide many more strategic possibilities in battle. You also have a variety of explosives at your disposal such as poison and ice grenades.

Some of the sidequests are plucked straight from the first game. Remember the spelunker who was afraid to do his own spelunking and the Thongoloth researcher who wanted you to take readings for him? There is more of that business to do here. Even though Id done this stuff before,I really didnt mind -- DeathSpank is just that much fun.

The first game allowed a second player to join in at any time and control DeathSpanks sidekick, Sparkles the Wizard. Sparkles is back in Thongs of Virtue, but a second secondary hero has also been added: Steve! Steve was raised by ninjas and rides a miniature unicorn, instantly making him one of the coolest videogame characters around. Unfortunately, two-player mode still leaves something to be desired as both players share a health bar and player two cant use any sweet loot. I prefer to do my DeathSpank questing on my own.

Room Zoom : Race For Impact (PC/FullIso/Multi)

Room Zoom: Race for Impact is fast and frenetic, but frustrating, too. Akin to 1999s Re-Volt, Room Zoom lets you race tiny cars through supersized environments, barreling through a bathroom, a mad scientists lab, and a kitchen, among other locales. Youll grab power-ups, dodge power tools, blast opponents, and find shortcuts to make it to the checkered flag first. Room Zoom is simple to pick up and play and it offers plenty of action, yet the chaotic gameplay and wildly cluttered tracks can sap the fun out of things as quickly as they create it.

Room Zoom lacks any multiplayer modes, instead pitting you against artificial intelligence-controlled cars with three ability levels. You can drive in single races of one to seven laps, though most of the tracks and cars are initially locked. To unlock them, youll need to finish in at least third place on each track as you battle through the games championship mode.

In the championship mode, you progress through three groups of four races, with each race taking place on a different track. You cant save your progress during each four-race group--you can only save between races--so once you get started, be prepared to keep playing for a while. Its a shame the developer ignored the fact that not every gamer has the time or inclination to play for long stretches. On top of that problem, youll find that the tracks dont smoothly ramp-up in difficulty. Instead, the game randomly mixes easy tracks with a few that will have you yanking your hair out.

At least the racing is fast and furious, with nary a dull patch. Thanks to the games interactive environments, alternate routes, and simple power-ups (fireballs, shields, and the like), you can go from first position to sixth and back again before you know what happened. In fact, things usually get too hectic or confusing. With so many power-ups and obstacles scattered about, races often end up feeling like chaotic free-for-alls where luck, not skill, determine the winner. Youll be driving along, and suddenly all you see are blinding flashes of light and a bunch of cars--including your own--flying every which way. You can only guess why. The race circuits themselves can be a bit confusing, too. Sometimes zipping off the beaten path is allowed as a valid shortcut, but other times the game forbids it for no apparent reason and automatically plops you back on the main track.

Odd physics can detract from the fun, too. The various cars you unlock all handle uniquely, which is certainly a welcome feature, yet sometimes they bounce off giant tools or juice cartons in dubious ways. Once in a while, you might even find yourself riding sideways on a wall as if your tires magically turned to flypaper.

Room Zooms circuits sound neat on paper. After all, its not many racing games that let you zip between the tines of a pitchfork, weave among cereal boxes, and perform other surreal stunts. And in fact, the basic track layouts are pretty well-designed, with plenty of ramps, tunnels, sudden hairpin turns, and movable and fixed obstacles. On the other hand, many of the tracks are too similar. Also, the environments all blur by so quickly that you rarely have time to notice any of their thematic details. The fact that the graphics are very brightly colored but are ultimately pedestrian, without any unique flair or memorability, doesnt help. Sound effects, likewise, leave no impression beyond that they merely meet the basic requirements: some generic engine sounds and some generic techno tunes.
